Did you know that India, and the Asian subcontinent, handles (no pun intended I assure you) the majority of the Western world’s manufacturing trade in, amongst other things, bathroom and kitchen accessories?
Take a look on the Internet and you’ll quickly find hundreds of manufacturing concerns, shippers and so forth dealing exclusively with cupboard furnishings. The continent has always been good at manufacturing in bulk – and with the West’s obsession with interior decorating compounded by a recent rise in the number of people who’ve decided t do up and live in their current home, rather than selling on, business is booming. The advantages, of course, of manufacturing trade in and with India, are well known. Also huge. Why pay to keep up a costly premises in the UK, when perfectly good facilities exist overseas – and facilities, at that, which are staffed by some of the most enthusiastic and hard working employees in the world? An Indian will tell you that the difference between an Indian worker and a British worker is simple – the Indian worker actually wants to do a job. That seems fairly self evident in the volume and quality of works pumped out by stainless steel handles India based factories and concerns. Some of the stuff turned out there is extraordinarily designed and of a high specialty: glass door handles, for example, designed to be fixed through clear panes of glass to provide a thoroughly satisfying modern effect. Chances are, any industrial building you pass or use that has those big square glass-set door handles in it, has had those handles built in, and flown from, India.
The advantages to the British consumer, direct, should be immediate. Labour and production, in India and indeed most of Asia, is extremely cheap. As a result, door furniture produced in India ought to be cheaper than door furniture produced in, say, Sweden. It probably isn’t, mind – but it should be. Stainless steel door handles India made should by rights be sold at a fraction of the cost of their European equivalents – and that means that someone, somewhere along the line, is making far more pre handle than they ought to be. Oh well. At least somebody is getting rich. And they are very nice handles, after all.
